Weekly Announcements: 5/6/16

 1. Youth Group Parent Night

TODAY, Friday, May 6, at 6:30 pm (dinner will be served at 7:00 pm)
Jefferson Activity Center (1299 W Jefferson Blvd.)

We invite the parents of our youth to join us for a night of celebrating God's work in the youth group! Our youth will be sharing original art pieces that reflect what we learned and experienced this school year.

We also invite parents of graduating 5th graders to attend so that you can meet our staff and other parents! (Due to space limitations, only parents are invited, and not 5th grade children.)

Please talk to or email Grace if you have questions.

2. Congregational Meeting: A congregational meeting will be held on Sunday, May 15, from 2-4 PM at Adventures Ahead. Childcare and translation will be available. Please RSVP to Alexis if you will need childcare.

At this meeting, we will be voting on several matters:
  • our 2016-2017 church budget (copies of the proposed budget will be available at church and online beginning on May 8)
  • affirming pastoral calls for Christal Green and Grace Weng

If you need a reading guide, you can pick one up at the hospitality table on Sunday, or view/download an online version here. As a supplement to the reading plan (or to catch up on books missed), you can view a number of summary videos from The Bible Project here.

5. Uplift Mothers, Oppose Jails | Mothers' Day Event on May 8th: Join the LA No More Jails Coalition and Critical Resistance Los Angeles outside the Lynwood Women’s Jail (Century Regional Detention Facility) for a rally and interactive event to build opposition to the proposed women’s jail in Lancaster and LA County’s $2.3 Billion Jail Plan.

When: Sunday, May 8th from 8am-12pm

Where: Century Regional Detention Center (11705 S. Alameda St. Lynwood, 90059)

There will be Spanish translation available & snacks and water!

The LA No More Jails Coalition seeks to build community to be able to support people with imprisoned loved ones while also growing opposition to the jail plan by holding space to talk about community alternatives to the policing and prisons that ravage communities.

For more information or to arrange a ride for the early part of the rally (before church), please contact Thea.

6. March to Break Free LA!: On May 14, California is taking part in a global wave of resistance to keep fossil fuels in the ground and accelerate the just transition to 100% renewable energy! Thousands of people from across the state are expected to join the march. Break Free LA will convene in Downtown Los Angeles to demand that our elected leaders put an end to neighborhood drilling and eliminate the oil and gas extraction practices that threaten people's health, environment and future.

The march begins at Saturday, May 14 at 1PM, starting at City Hall. There will be buses leaving South LA to take folks to the rally point at 11AM - three buses leaving from Mercado la Paloma and one bus leaving from Holman United Methodist Church. The buses will return at 5PM from Pershing Square.

All are welcome to attend! We are especially inviting youth to participate and adults to volunteer chaperoning the youth. Contact Niki if you're interested or have questions.
