Weekly Announcements: 2/19/16

 140 Days of Prayer and Fasting: The theme for this year is Unplugged - Making Space for God. We are exploring some new spiritual disciplines (like taking a break from technology) while we spend time reflecting on the source of Jesus' strength. If you don't already have a copy of the Prayer Guide, you can pick one up at the hospitality table this Sunday or download an online version here (available in English and Spanish).


The following gatherings offer opportunities to pray together during this season:
  • A group will be meeting on Sunday mornings at 9:15 am at Mack Elementary (courtyard picnic tables) to pray together during the remainder of Lent. All are welcome! For more information, contact Jen R.
  • Come join us for Worship - Prayer - Hearing from God - Interceding for our Church: God loves to spend time with us and share His heart with us. 2OPPORTUNITY TO SERVE! Sunday Service Sound TeamThe team that brings all the worship, preaching and testimonies directly to your ears every Sunday is in need of volunteer(s) to serve in their monthly rotation. No experience is required, though an excitement for technology and music is helpful. High schoolers are welcome. Go behind the scenes helping to bring our Sunday services to life while learning a fun new skill! Looking to have someone jump on board ASAP. If this SOUNDS like a fun opportunity, please contact Tony.
 
 
3. 2016 All-Church Retreat: Please note the following key dates and other information about our upcoming church retreat...
  • Retreat dates: Friday, May 27 - Sunday, May 29
  • Location: The Oaks Camp and Conference Center (Lake Hughes, CA)
  • Cost: $145 for adults and teens (13-17), $115 for children (3-12), free for infants (0-2) (these costs include registration fees of $40 per adult or $20 per teen/child)
  • Scholarship assistance is available for those who begin participating in the Retreat Savings Program (RSP) on or before February 28 (**Note: The RSP participation requirement does not apply to those who have been at Redeemer for less than a year)
  • Next RSP collection opportunity at church: Sunday, 2/28
  • Registration and scholarship application processes begin Sunday, 3/13 (scholarships awarded on a first-come, first-served basis / registration fees must be paid at time of registration, unless the fee amount has already been saved through the RSP)
  • Registration deadline: Sunday 5/15

4. Make Jefferson Beautiful Community Meeting - part 2! Make Jefferson Beautiful is excited to share PART TWO of our Community Visioning Meeting to make Jefferson Blvd a beautiful, safe, and activating street for folks to walk and bike along. This second meeting will be held on Saturday, March 5, at 10 am, at the Denker Recreation Center.
 
Our first Make Jefferson Beautiful meeting identified bike lanes and street trees as the top two street improvements that will encourage more active transportation along Jefferson Blvd. We've already started planting trees (with more to come!), and we finally have LADOT engineering drawings for bike lane possibilities along Jefferson. We will be sharing and discussing these bike lane possibilities, their trade-offs, and other built environment improvements like sidewalk extensions and pedestrian lighting.

5. RCP Health Survey Study: RCP needs help administering health surveys to folks who live around the Jefferson Drill Site! This is part of a larger study we are conducting in partnership with Occidental College and UC Berkeley. We can pay $15/hour and highly encourage bilingual folks to help out. We will be surveying from 9:30am-2pm on Feb 20th (TOMORROW), 21st, 27th and 28th. Come help for however long you can on whichever days you're available. Niki will be providing training and materials to conduct the surveys.

3. Spring Break VBS: It's time to get ready for our second annual VBS ("Turn It Up")! If you volunteered in Summer 2014, you know it was a great time for our Redeemer family to spend together getting to know families in our community and sharing the Gospel message with our neighborhood kids. This year, Turn It Up will be held March 21-25 (during Spring Break). Let's make this spring break, holy week, a time to spread the the Good News to our young neighbors and their families. This is a great opportunity to connect and invite our neighbors to other Easter gatherings that will happen at the end of VBS week as well. Please click this link to learn how you can get involved and sign up to serve. You may also contact Christal directly.

2. Retreat Savings Program: Thanks to all who have started saving for this year’s church retreat through our Retreat Savings Program! If you are not participating in the program through your home fellowship, the next opportunity to make a deposit at church will be this Sunday, January 31. You can turn in your deposit at the RSP table in the back immediately following service.
  • Our 2016 retreat will be held at The Oaks Camp & Conference Center, from Friday, May 27, through Sunday, May 29. The cost for adults and teens is $145; the cost for children ages 3-12 is $115.
  • For more information about the savings program, please speak to your home fellowship leader or contact Alexis.
 
3. Jefferson Blvd. Tree Planting: RCP will host a community tree planting day on February 6 from 9am to noon. We plan to plant 19 trees along Jefferson Blvd. as part of the Make Jefferson Beautiful Campaign. There will be a tree planting training this Saturday, January 30, from 9am to 1pm at Adventures Ahead for anyone who would like to serve as a team leader. Contact Niki for more information.
 
 
4. Live Scanning for Children's/Youth Ministry Volunteers: If you serve in the nursery or with children's church, youth group/youth church, or King's Kids and have not yet been fingerprinted, there will be a Live Scan session this Sunday, January 31, from 2 pm to 5 pm at Adventures Ahead (1438 W. Jefferson Blvd.). Please bring a government-issued photo ID with you to the scanning session. If you have questions, or if you cannot make the session and need information about getting scanned independently, contact Alexis.
 
 
5. Membership Class Sign-Ups: Membership classes will be offered this spring in English and Spanish. If you are interested in learning about becoming a member of Church of the Redeemer, please sign up at the Hospitality Table on Sunday morning or contact Alexis for more information. 
  • Please note: Participating in the membership class does not mean you are committing to become a member of the church; part of the class process is discerning whether membership in Redeemer is the right thing for you at this time.
