Weekly Announcements: 1/28/16

 140 Days of Prayer and Fasting: The theme for this year is Unplugged - Making Space for God. We will explore some new spiritual disciplines (like taking a break from technology) while we spend time reflecting on the source of Jesus' strength. Please take some time this week to familiarize yourself with the prayer guide and the spiritual disciplines we will be practicing together in this season.  Visit the hospitality table this Sunday to pick up your prayer guide or download an online version here (available in English and Spanish). You can also sign up at the hospitality table for a day to fast during Lent.

  • Prayer Walk: Come join us on Saturday, February 13as we kick off our 40 Days of Prayer and Fasting with a prayer walk. Time: 7:45 - 9:00 am. Location to be determined.
 
2. Retreat Savings Program: Thanks to all who have started saving for this year’s church retreat through our Retreat Savings Program! If you are not participating in the program through your home fellowship, the next opportunity to make a deposit at church will be this Sunday, January 31. You can turn in your deposit at the RSP table in the back immediately following service.
  • Our 2016 retreat will be held at The Oaks Camp & Conference Center, from Friday, May 27, through Sunday, May 29. The cost for adults and teens is $145; the cost for children ages 3-12 is $115.
  • For more information about the savings program, please speak to your home fellowship leader or contact Alexis.
 
3. Jefferson Blvd. Tree Planting: RCP will host a community tree planting day on February 6 from 9am to noon. We plan to plant 19 trees along Jefferson Blvd. as part of the Make Jefferson Beautiful Campaign. There will be a tree planting training this Saturday, January 30, from 9am to 1pm at Adventures Ahead for anyone who would like to serve as a team leader. Contact Niki for more information.
 
 
4. Live Scanning for Children's/Youth Ministry Volunteers: If you serve in the nursery or with children's church, youth group/youth church, or King's Kids and have not yet been fingerprinted, there will be a Live Scan session this Sunday, January 31, from 2 pm to 5 pm at Adventures Ahead (1438 W. Jefferson Blvd.). Please bring a government-issued photo ID with you to the scanning session. If you have questions, or if you cannot make the session and need information about getting scanned independently, contact Alexis.
 
 
5. Membership Class Sign-Ups: Membership classes will be offered this spring in English and Spanish. If you are interested in learning about becoming a member of Church of the Redeemer, please sign up at the Hospitality Table on Sunday morning or contact Alexis for more information. 
  • Please note: Participating in the membership class does not mean you are committing to become a member of the church; part of the class process is discerning whether membership in Redeemer is the right thing for you at this time.

MidWinter Conference: Pastor Kevin, Christal (Director of Children's Ministry) & Grace (Youth Director) are traveling to Chicago this weekend for the Covenant's MidWinter Pastors' Conference and related meetings. Please pray for their safe travel, and for this to be a fruitful time of training, relationship-building, and visioning for their ministries. Thanks!

5. Covenant Women's Conference: The Covenant's triennial women's conference is coming up this summer! The theme of this conference is "Quench" (exploring Jesus' invitation to drink of the living water). Advance opportunities begin on Wednesday, July 27, and the main conference will be held from Thursday, July 28, through Sunday, July 31. Weekly Announcements: 1/8/16

1. CCDA Coming to LA: The Christian Community Development Association (CCDA) National Conference will be held in Los Angeles in 2016 (August 31-September 3)! This conference provides an opportunity to hear from and interact with "practitioners and partners dedicated to the work of transforming and restoring communities through presence and practice."

More information about attending and/or volunteering (volunteers are eligible for discounted registration fees) will be forthcoming. (Some additional details about the conference are available here.)
 
2. Winter Shelter Program: With winter settling in, homeless individuals and families in our community may be in need of overnight shelter. The LA Homeless Services Authority has put together a list of shelters in the Greater Los Angeles metro area (see page 5 for South LA locations).
