5.   Membership Class Sign-Ups:  Membership classes will be offered this fall in English and Spanish. If you are interested in learning about becoming a member of Church of the Redeemer, please sign up at the Hospitality Table on Sunday morning or contact Alexis Spencer-Byers for more information.

6.   Libertas College Prep Update:  This was a milestone week for Libertas College Prep.  Anna Carlstone stood in line from 1:00-6:00pm on Tuesday, waiting to be admitted to the LAUSD Board meeting.  Lisa and Eric Barlow and I (Anna Parks) joined her around 4:00pm, along with most of the Libertas board of directors.  We had each prepared a 3-minute speech explaining the need for a school like this in our neighborhood.  Sometime between 8:00 and 9:00pm, the School Board finally voted to approve the Libertas charter!  This clears the way to start work on the next major task: securing a facility.  Anna will soon apply to use classrooms at an existing LAUSD school.  She has identified three possibilities, each just slightly outside our church ministry area.  She has already collected 150 "Intent to Enroll" forms from shoppers at Food 4 Less, Ralphs and El Super.  The more neighbors who submit interest forms, the greater the likelihood of Libertas finding a facility close to us.  If you would like to help by inviting families on your block with children currently in the 3rd or 4th grade to submit an interest form, please pick up forms at church on Sunday.  To be included in her facility application, the forms need to be turned in by Sunday, October 5th.  For more information, call Anna Parks.

1.   Gentrification with Justice Meeting – this Sunday, August 24th from 2-4 pm - As you may know, there have been some ongoing conversations in our church about changes to our neighborhood in recent years, and concerns about affordable housing options going forward.  We would like to invite you to a brainstorming meeting to discuss our observations and some ideas about how we might address this developing challenge as a community.  (Please note:This meeting will be fully bilingual.) Details below...

Where: Taylor/Carr House (3858 S Harvard Blvd, 90062)

When: Sunday, August 24th, 2-4 PM
Who: You, your friends and neighbors! Please invite others who might be interested in becoming involved

How: Please RSVP to Casey and let her know if you need childcare, for how many kids, and their ages

Why: "Gentrification means to welcome a new economic and social life for our cities and, with the proactive involvement of the saints, can introduce a whole new era of hopefulness for the poor. Our mantra must be: gentrification with justice." - Bob Lupton

2.  Home Fellowship Sign-Ups:  As Pastor Kevin reminded us at church last Sunday, Home Fellowships (weekly gatherings to share a meal, study the Bible, and pray together) are where much of the life of our church takes place. If you are not in a Home Fellowship and are interested in joining one, please fill out a card at the Hospitality Table on Sunday morning or contact Alexis Spencer-Byers for more information.

3.  Membership Class Sign-Ups:  Membership classes will be offered this fall in English and Spanish. If you are interested in learning about becoming a member of Church of the Redeemer, please sign up at the Hospitality Table on Sunday morning or contact Alexis Spencer-Byers for more information.

4.  Libertas College Prep: Over the last 12 months, a highly respected organization has been laying groundwork to open a charter middle school here in our neighborhood.  The founding principal, Anna Carlstone, is a believer and has sought out partnership with both our church and Adventures Ahead.  The new school will open in Fall 2015 with grades 4 and 5, and Anna is applying to LAUSD for space on a local school campus.  Two district schools in our neighborhood have space available, and it would be a great blessing to families here to have a quality middle school within walking distance.  The key to winning space on a local campus is to demonstrate broad parent interest in the school.  So for the next two months Anna will be canvassing grocery stores, libraries, parks and after-school programs with interest forms.  The more forms she can submit to the district, the greater the chance of being offered space.  If you would like to help, please consider sharing information about the school with families on your block who have kids in 3rd or 4th grade.  More information and forms will be available at church on Sunday.
