Weekly Announcements: 6/10/16

 1. Kevin Blue Ordination: On Saturday, June 25, at 7:00 pm, Pastor Kevin will be ordained by the Evangelical Covenant Church (during the Covenant Annual Meeting, held this year in Phoenix) and receive a permanent ministerial credential with the denomination. (The ECC offers multiple levels of credentialing; previously, Pastor Kevin held a ministry license that was renewed on an annual basis.) The ordination service will be streamed on the ECC website (covchurch.org), so feel free to watch along and celebrate this significant moment in Pastor Kevin's life and ministry. Please also pray for him and Pastor Jen, that God will continue to shepherd them as they shepherd us!

 
 
2. Make Jefferson Beautiful Open House:

All are welcome to this come-and-go event to learn about proposed street safety improvements along Jefferson Blvd and how they might impact traffic. LADOT has conducted a traffic analysis of the proposed changes and will be present to share findings and answer questions.

3. CCDA Conference: The Christian Community Development Association (CCDA) National Conference will be held in Los Angeles in 2016 (August 31-September 3)! This conference provides an opportunity to hear from and interact with "practitioners and partners dedicated to the work of transforming and restoring communities through presence and practice."
 
Conference registration is open (click here for event details and to register). Or, you can sign up to volunteer and pay only $59 for registration (click here to learn more about volunteer opportunities and to access the volunteer application).
 
In addition to the main conference, there are a number of exciting pre-conference & supplemental events in the works:
  • El Camino del Inmigrante, August 20-30 (walking the approximately 150 miles from Tijuana, Mexico to Los Angeles, California, USA, highlighting individual stories along the way and learning/reflecting on how our current immigration system impacts specific people groups--you can join in for the final leg in Los Angeles even if you can't participate in the whole walk)
  • Affordable Housing Bus Tour, August 30
  • Go & See Events (including one to visit COR/RCP and other Expo Park ministries), September 1 & 2
  • National Student Leadership Initiative, August 31-September 3 (training for student leaders ages 15-19, teaching principles of Christian community development and providing tools for taking action in participants' home communities)

Benevolence Fund: Following the example of the Early Church (see Acts 2:42-47 and Acts 4:32-35), Church of the Redeemer maintains a Benevolence Fund, overseen by our Deacons' ministry, to provide financial assistance to people in our congregation and neighborhood as needed. Please keep this ministry in mind, and prayerfully consider making occasional or regular contributions to the fund. Benevolence offerings can be made at the hospitality table on Sunday mornings.

Meeting for community members impacted by the Jefferson Drill Site. Learn about RCP's efforts around the drill site, share concerns and experiences, and learn how to take action as a community to end neighborhood drilling!

Weekly Announcements: 5/20/16

 1. All-Church Retreat: Our annual church retreat begins one week from today! 

If you have registered for the retreat, you will be receiving information about what to bring, etc. by email in the next few days. You may also pick up a copy of the packing list at the hospitality table at church this Sunday
 

The theme for this year's retreat is "Living as Sons and Daughters." Our hope is that our time away together will not only be an opportunity to enjoy fun activities (sign up at church on Sunday if you haven't already...) and one another's company, but will also be a meaningful experience of hearing from God and growing in our relationship with him. To this end, we are invited and encouraged to spend time over the coming week praying and preparing our hearts to receive what God has in store for us.

** Please note: There will be no Church of the Redeemer Saturday (5/28) or Sunday (5/29) services in Los Angeles during retreat weekend.  **



2. Retreat Transportation: Carpools are being arranged to ensure that everyone has a way to get to the retreat. If you are not already part of a carpool and either need a ride or have extra seats in your car, please speak with your home fellowship leader. If you are not in a home fellowship, contact Claudia or Marvin for transportation coordination.

 1. All-Church Retreat: Our annual church retreat begins two weeks from today! Please note the following key dates and other information...

  • Dates: Friday, May 27, 4:00 PM - Sunday, May 29, 2:00 PM
  • Location: The Oaks Camp and Conference Center (Lake Hughes, CA)
  • Cost: $145 for adults and teens (13-17), $115 for children (3-12), free for infants (0-2) (these costs include registration fees of $40 per adult or $20 per teen/child)
  • THIS SUNDAY, May 15, is your final opportunity to register for the retreat! Visit the retreat table at the back of the sanctuary after service to register for the retreat, fill out a scholarship application, and/or make a retreat savings program deposit.
  • Registered retreat attendees may also sign up for Saturday afternoon activities (zip line, paint ball, archery, batting cages) at the registration table on May 15.

3. March to Break Free LA!: On THIS SATURDAY, May 14, California is taking part in a global wave of resistance to keep fossil fuels in the ground and accelerate the just transition to 100% renewable energy! Thousands of people from across the state are expected to join the march. Break Free LA will convene in Downtown Los Angeles to demand that our elected leaders put an end to neighborhood drilling and eliminate the oil and gas extraction practices that threaten people's health, environment and future.
 
The march begins at 1PM on Saturday, 5/14, starting at City Hall. There will be buses leaving South LA to take folks to the rally point at 11AM - three buses leaving from Mercado la Paloma and one bus leaving from Holman United Methodist Church. The buses will return at 5PM from Pershing Square.
 

All are welcome to attend! We are especially inviting youth to participate and adults to volunteer chaperoning the youth. Contact Niki if you're interested or have questions.

We invite the parents of our youth to join us for a night of celebrating God's work in the youth group! Our youth will be sharing original art pieces that reflect what we learned and experienced this school year.
 
We also invite parents of graduating 5th graders to attend so that you can meet our staff and other parents! (Due to space limitations, only parents are invited, and not 5th grade children.)

4. Old Testament Read-Through: We are continuing in our two-year journey through the Old Testament. If you need a reading guide, you can pick one up at the hospitality table on Sunday, or view/download an online version here. As a supplement to the reading plan (or to catch up on books missed), you can view a number of summary videos from The Bible Project here.


5. Uplift Mothers, Oppose Jails | Mothers' Day Event on May 8th: Join the LA No More Jails Coalition and Critical Resistance Los Angeles outside the Lynwood Women’s Jail (Century Regional Detention Facility) for a rally and interactive event to build opposition to the proposed women’s jail in Lancaster and LA County’s $2.3 Billion Jail Plan. 
 
When: Sunday, May 8th from 8am-12pm
 
Where: Century Regional Detention Center (11705 S. Alameda St. Lynwood, 90059)
 
There will be Spanish translation available & snacks and water! 
 
 
The LA No More Jails Coalition seeks to build community to be able to support people with imprisoned loved ones while also growing opposition to the jail plan by holding space to talk about community alternatives to the policing and prisons that ravage communities.

5. Faith Initiative to Abolish Trafficking: The Faith Initiative to Abolish Trafficking (FIAT) is a gathering of churches who have been called to fight human trafficking in L.A. FIAT is offering a Human Trafficking 101 training on April 23, at 9 AM, followed by a workshop (10 AM to 1 PM) featuring special guest Harmony Grillo. Both events will be held at Ward AME Church (1177 W. 25th St., Los Angeles). For more information, view the event flier or visit fiatla.org.

Weekly Announcements: 4/8/16

 1. Lety Trigueros Funeral Service: The funeral service for Hermana Lety will be held next Thursday, April 14, at 6:00 pm at Continental Funeral Home in East LA (5353 E. Beverly Blvd., 90022). The service will include a time of testimonies/stories about Hermana Lety and God's work in/through her life, so please consider whether there is something you would like to share. Refreshments will be served following the service; if you would like to help by bringing a dish or assisting with setup/cleanup, please contact Bethany.

 
The burial will be held on Friday, April 15, at 1:00 pm at Forest Lawn Cemetery/Hollywood Hills (6300 Forest Lawn Dr., 90068).
 
All are welcome at both observances. Please continue to hold Hermana Lety's family in prayer during this time!

Staff will be offering FREE live scans, immigration (DACA) services, criminal record clearing services, traffic amnesty, and health and wellness services. Space is limited – so please reserve your spot by calling: 213-465-0070 and review this flier for information on what to bring.
